Description Benjamin Block 2010-05-25 15:15:48 UTC
I can't get the latest stable grub to compile on a new system that I'm currently installing. I saw a thread about this in the FAQ, but in there Maedhros is pointing to the CFLAGS-env-variable and this variable is unset in the ebuild, so it can't be my problem (or?).
I haven't installed any cc, besides the one that is delivered through the stage3-tarball. gcc-config and binutils-config are pointing to a existing version. Other ebuilds are building fine with my current make.conf (I also tried to comment CHOST, CFLAGS, CXXFLAGS and MAKEOPTS. It doesn't change anything).

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge -av grub
2. Yes
Actual Results:
The build fails during the configure-step.

Expected Results:
The build is successful.

Is grub the only package that fails with this error?

yes, so far its the only one. I already emerged some daemons (syslog-ng, fcron, logrotate, ..) and I had no problems. After trying to emerge grub I also emerged some other little things (I also compiled some minimal-examples to verify that my cc is working with my current make.conf-settings), so it looks like that at least it is problem with things that only grub uses at the moment.

This error looks multilib related, as if the toolchain was built on non-multilib profile.

Hello,

grub might be the only program to compile 32bit code (to be run directly from BIOS before the 64bit kernel boots).

I assign this one to toolchains, since this is clearly a gcc problem (that might be solved by any severe action, like reinstall or recompile gcc or ...). I just don't know what to suggest at this point.

assuming user screwed up their system as that is the only time we've seen errors like these:

configure:3198: x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc -m32 -Wl,-O1 conftest.c >&5

if you're going to do multilib, start with a multilib stage
