The handbook tells new users that 'wireless is cumbersome' in linux, and proposes that they edit wpa_supplicant.conf by hand. This certainly is a cumbersome approach, and is surely out of date with current practise. The guide be updated to prefer that users use one of (many) network managers that are available for linux now. I find that most users use either networkmanager or wicd - why not mention these to users before they start hacking away at wpa_supplicant.conf? Reproducible: Always
Good idea; thanks for reporting. Graphical clients like wicd and NetworkManager have been recommended before resorting to the command line. I also included notes on wicd-curses (a CLI frontend to wicd) and the optional qt4 frontend to wpa_supplicant. I also went through the guide and removed some old thoughts on wpa_supplicant and wifi on Linux in general. Fixed in CVS.
