Emerging vtk-5.4.2-r1 I get a similar error. Which disappeares, if I use the vtk-5.4.2-boost-vector_property_map.patch. I had to use the patch to compile the paraview ebuild with boost-1.42 and enabled boost use flag. Otherwise the build crashed like discribed. Since boost:1.42 is no longer masked by any keyword, this could now easily happen to other users.
That and we probably should stabilize a 3.8.x release.

The current ebuild fails to build with recent boost.
