Description Alan 2003-10-25 08:49:36 UTC
This problem is repeatable. I didn't see any other bugs containing term
"searchdesc".

Built a gentoo box from scratch this week. Whenever I do an emerge searchdesc,
it takes so long that I eventually stop it with ctrl-c. I've let it run for 5
minutes or more and it never returns any results. After killing it with ctrl-c,
regular emerge operations give an error "!!! Error calculating dependencies.
Please correct." Emerge sync SEEMS to fix this, but I'm not sure how to tell if
it's REALLY fixed or not.

If you do a ps ax in another console while it's running, you see various ebuild
processes. Not sure if that is true in a working environment or not.

Older versions didn't have this problem. emerge --version reports
Portage 2.0.49-r15 (default-x86-1.4, gcc-3.2.3, glibc-2.3.2-r1, 2.4.22-ac4)

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
emerge searchdesc searchterm
or
emerge -S searchterm

Actual Results:
The spinning slash that indicates activity is very very slow. By the time I lost
patience no search results had been returned. Afterwards emerge gives the error
about dependencies.

Expected Results:
Should have shown me packages whose descriptions matched my searchterm.

I'm seeing this too -- left it running for maybe half an hour. Didn't see
any warnings about depedencies though ..

jean@klippie jean $ emerge --version
Portage 2.0.49-r21 (default-x86-1.4, gcc-3.2.3, glibc-2.3.2-r1, 2.4.20-gentoo-r5)

This problem happens in the current portage? (2.0.50-r1/r3).
Let me know.
Comment 3 Alan 2004-04-12 14:39:18 UTC
I can no longer duplicate the problem - my current system is:
Portage 2.0.50-r1 (default-x86-1.4, gcc-3.3.2, glibc-2.3.2-r9, 2.6.1-gentoo)
Comment 4 Nicholas Jones (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-04-12 15:19:35 UTC
synchronis db modules fix this. :)
