Hi. I'd like to bring up an idea of a simple bash, python or ncurses text installer. It would be fully optional. For a start, the installer could quite easily: * help modprobe the correct network card, with a menu * help set up Internet addresses * guide you through fdisk (or cfdisk), perhaps auto-partition * help configure cflags and USE flags, with a menu * customize a profile * choose between GRUB or LILO * choose a system logger * choose a cron * intelligently select filesystem utilities and other sysapps * set up some users and passwords And a lot more. ^_^ I'll take this on myself if no one else wants to, but I don't script or program very well.
Nicholas, I think cursingcow is a nice fix for this ;)
Yeah -- cursingcow ( in gentoo-src ) is doing almost all of these things. I am hoping to start polishing it off soon, so if you would like to help test, please let me know.
Check out the Gentoo Linux Install Script - http://glis.sf.net - which should be filed as a different bug.
Moving these so we can remove the "Install CD" component from "Gentoo Linux". I apologize to everyone for this spam, but according to the bugzilla developers, this is the only reasonable way to do this.
