-march=pentium3 or -march=i686. haven't tried others

checking for i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc... i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc
checking for C compiler default output... configure: error: C compiler cannot 
create executables

harumm... worksforme... do other packages work?  This is NOT a package specific
problem, if you are getting an error like that you will generally see it everywhere.

lol, I rm'd the distfile and it worked the second time. something funky is 
going on with the mirrors.
