Description Mark Hughes 2003-10-23 08:39:19 UTC
I am no expert on these things, but I believe this is correct.

According to the man page gimp-remote is a small utility that tells a running
gimp to open a (local or remote) image file. It does so by searching for a gimp
toolbox on the active display. If it can find a gimp toolbox, a synthetic drop
event is created which makes gimp think the files would have been dropped onto
the toolbox.

The default gnome desktop simply uses "gimp" to open .jpg files. If one opens 5
jpegs sequentially, 5 instances of the gimp get started. If gimp-remote were
available and substituted as the default action for jpgs, only one instance of
gimp would get started. (Similarly, our default install of GQview tries to use
"gimp-remote -n %f" to open several image files at once without starting a new
instance of gimp each time. Since gimp-remote doesn't seem to be available, the
default install of GQview is also a bit bunged up.)

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:

Oops. GQview will work if gimp-remote -n is changed to just gimp.
Comment 2 foser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-10-24 06:53:37 UTC
i think gimp-remote getting built depends on the gnome USE flag (*provide
your 'emerge info' in bug reports please*).

reopen if im wrong.
Comment 3 Mark Hughes 2003-10-28 15:02:55 UTC
I am sorry but I don't see which USE flag it would be. Here's the emerge
info
