Description Frank Russo 2003-10-21 21:46:25 UTC
Using genkernel 1.18, I can generate kernels for my box that has an Adaptec
2940 UW. Upon rebooting, I see that the 2940 is found (all is well) and then
found again. At this point, the second driver is trying to do a reset and
then timming out;

"Timeout, reset host 1 device 0 pid 22, aborting, retrying and "trying harder".

see forum entries
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=84286&highlight=scsi+timeout

another similar example (almost) is here

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=85397&highlight=trying+harder

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.have an adaptec 2940UW in an A7V333
2.Genkernel with gentoo-sources
3.Config boot loader and reboot

Actual Results:
Kernel boots, finds card and devices, finds the card a second time, and goes
into a SCSI device timeout/reset loop

Expected Results:
Found the card/devices once

Workaround is to build kernel by hand

what kernel version are you using? Could you please post your kernel .config here please?

My kernel config file

This is my kernel config for gentoo-sources 2.4.20-r8
Comment 3 Frank Russo 2003-11-19 00:48:31 UTC
I receive the error with genkernel 1.18 against both gentoo-sources (2.4.20r8) and ac-sources. My .config is pretty blah.

Adaptec 2940 (*)
Promise 20276 (*)
Via blah (*)

Running alsa and NVidia 4496 drivers. I can reproduce the error on fresh installs though (this is how I origionaly came to the error).

Thank you for your time,
Frank Russo

since you are doing genkernel now, here you go :)
Comment 5 Philippe THOMAS 2004-01-17 00:56:29 UTC
I had the same problem. That comes that the kernel load aic7xxx and found the card. But then it load aic7xxx_old then found the card another time and can't access it because it's already use by first module. Just have to unflag aic7xxx_old in kernel config.
Comment 6 Brad House 2004-01-18 13:47:51 UTC
well, let me know if it still happens with genkernel 3.x
this was with genkernel 1.18
