I'm the lead developer on the GNUMP3d project, (www.gnump3d.org), and I've just noticed that the Gentoo project is including this as part of the ports collection. I think this is a fine idea but I notice that the package currently available is an older version. I'd like to make a couple of suggestions about this: * If a package is added to the ports collection it would be nice to notify the upstream author as a matter of policy. * It would be wonderful if it were possible to create 'ebuild' files from a non-gentoo system - I don't notice any mention of this in the FAQ. * The packages that are listed on the package page don't have owners associated with them; that would be a great addition, because it would mean that I could liase directly with the 'owner' to handle updates, etc.
1: true dat, would be nice 2: heh, g'luck with that ;) ... atm it isnt possible 3: some owners die, some owners are users, etc... right now if you have a prob you post it to bugzilla
Seemant, What should we do with this? //ZhEN
the thing is that developers on a project the size of gentoo are in a state of flux. so we have people who "own" certain packages, but that is not the case for all of them at the moment. Bugzilla is really your best bet, because it has the highest visibility for the developer base and the concerned user base. As for notifying the upstream author, we do tend to try and liase with as many authors as possible. That this has not happened in this case is regrettable, but please feel free to think of vapier@gentoo and seemant@gentoo as your liasons for this :) Ebuild files are simply bash scripts. They can be created anywhere you can get an editor :) However, testing the scripts really can only happen on a gentoo system, unless you port over the package management system (portage) which is really just gentooficating your regular box anyway :)
