Description Valentin Sanchez 2003-10-20 21:49:38 UTC
I change my old TNT RIVA CARD for new Gforce4 MX 440 AGP8x 128M, my working old
system use a 1280x1024 framebufer for boot display and console, this work fine
with TNT, but at boot with new card, system said "viedo mode incorrect" and
display a menu to select a new mode (1-8), if fb is > 800x600.
Under X no problem and work fine in 1280x1024.
My kernel is 2.4.20-gentoo-r7 and update all stable packages.

Thanks

In the live CD 1.4 AthlonXP the framebuffer fail.
I' think it is possible, for dual chanel out put in Gforce4 (Monitor and
TV), and kernel at startup only view a TV ??? (Sorry my english...)
Comment 2 Valentin Sanchez 2003-10-21 03:28:24 UTC
When boot from Live CD 1.4,
at prompt # load gentoo (ENTER)
and load initrd.1024 the error msg is:

You passed a undefined mode number
Press <RETURN> to see video modes avaible, <SPACE> to continue or wait 30
secs

and boot without splash screen (text mode)

can you show us a lspci -vvv for that card?

Comment 7 Brian Jackson (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-10-22 22:17:17 UTC
Okay, your card isn't supported by even the most recent kernels, so it's
going to take a bit of work to get this working. I'll see if I can work up
a patch for this and let you know if/when I have something.
Comment 8 Valentin Sanchez 2003-10-23 06:35:50 UTC
ok, I looking in forums and Google for solution, the problem is generic and
no solution at this time.

Regards

As an update, my geforce 440mx 128mb works on knoppix (3.3) with a 1280x1024 framebuffer but won't go above 640x480 in gentoo. Is this related to reported problems with highmem and framebuffer or is this card just not compatible yet (although knoppix has got support) ?
Comment 10 Andrej Kacian (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-12-28 17:19:25 UTC
I have the same problem, with GeForce4 MX440 64MB and it's really been bugging me for a while. Let me know if you need more info.
