If this error is telling me there is a problem with hda3, I set it up as a Reiser fs using the remainder of a 40GB IDE HD. It's a fairly new (1-2 months) HD. Debian has been installing-running fine on it.

Yeah, usually messages like that mean you have a hardware problem :/ Check out your cdrom.
