Description f1r31c3r 2010-04-20 05:05:05 UTC
I been currently chasing my system fixing broken packages due to a portage update which brought in the new xorg-server 1.7

Very strange the libgl.so.1 seems to have broken throughout the system i think i fixed it by doing eselect opengl set xorg-x11 being as the ati-drivers are blocked.

but even stranger is that things started to fail like dominos what i mean is that emerge --update world brought in packages such as
gnome-session
app-admin/gnome-system-tools
app-admin/system-tools-backends
which were reported to me masked by x86 keyword so i unmasked them satisfied there dependencies which exploded after they were installed with the loss of libgl.so.1 again.

running revdep-rebuild caused files to be rebuilt again failing to find this libgl.so again i run eselect opengl set xorg-x11

seems now to be compiling with less errors yet gave me something else it told me i needed policykit use flag i added it and it brought in sys-apps/devicekit-power
if i remember correctly.
Next i thought well new dependency big deal it then got stuck on dev-python/PyQt saying there were no ebuilds lol.

i manually went crazy and uninstalled the installed version and re processed revdep-rebuild seems it don't call pyqt anymore.

Could this be a bug in portage not being able to handle installed vs new packages.

If this is normal then hey ignore this. I just found this a strange behavior for portage.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Find and install dev-python/PyQt try get revdep-rebuild to need it and try install policykit with the use flag in make.conf unmask sys-auth/consolekit
app-admin/gnome-system-tools
app-admin/system-tools-backends
sys-apps/devicekit-power
As this is what it asks for
2.PyQT would say it cant be found does not exist as a valid atom against current portage and policykit wont allow downgrading or let you remove the policykit flag.
app-admin/system-tools-backends only now finds 2.28 and if you remove it from keywords it wont have any of the lower version, it becomes addicted to the higher version without offering you the unmasked version
3.needs manual uninstall eg emerge -C before revdep-rebuild will continue for the PyQT. Cant step the sys-auth/consolekit
app-admin/gnome-system-tools
app-admin/system-tools-backends
sys-apps/devicekit-power
Backwards seems they have stuck themselves in there

Actual Results:
revdep-rebuild is actually finishing it process as i type this without errors/call die signals which has now completed ok. Off to emerge --update world

Expected Results:
A long twisted winding road to repair system after the latest portage update of world

I am sure certain faults were related to ati-drivers being blocked but why the strange portage behavior surely portage should remove or upgrade packages that are removed from the portage tree or as i usually found there is a news item telling you to remove and or upgrade PyQT i am referring to for this one.
I have no idea about whats up with the versioning on sys-auth/consolekit
app-admin/gnome-system-tools
app-admin/system-tools-backends
sys-apps/devicekit-power
but hey we shall see after i come to update world after revdep-rebuild

I don't see any bugs here.

PyQt was removed from Portage.. polkit blocks and replaces older policykit.. ati/amd has failed by not providing supported drivers in time, use xf86-video-ati instead.. and so on
