After emerging sendmail you can find "FEATURE(smrsh)" (not an exact copy of that line, sorry) in sendmail.mc (and, I guess, the appropriate lines in sendmail.cf). That means sendmail uses smrsh. The bug is: smrsh is not installed when sendmail is emerged. The error I solved with removing the FEATURE and rebuilding the cf was "smrsh: uid xxx: attempt to use "something inside your .forward" (stat failed)" Sorry, because I am not that precise. Give a comment, if you don't get the problem. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. emerge sendmail 2. create a .forward 3. send/receive mail and have a look at /var/log/messages Portage 2.0.49-r13-2 (default-x86-1.4, gcc-3.2.3, glibc-2.3.2-r1, 2.4.22) ================================================================= System uname: 2.4.22 i686 AMD Duron(tm) Processor Gentoo Base System version 1.4.3.10 ccache version 2.3 [enabled] ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=athlon-xp -pipe" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" COMPILER="gcc3" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /var/qmail/control /usr/share/config /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=athlon-xp -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="sandbox autoaddcvs ccache" GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://sunsite.informatik.rwth-aachen.de/pub/Linux/gentoo" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="" SYNC="rsync://rsync.Informatik.rwth-aachen.de/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 oss avi crypt cups encode foomaticdb gif jpeg gnome libg++ libwww mad motif mpeg ncurses nls pdflib png quicktime spell truetype xml2 xmms xv zlib gdbm berkdb slang readline aalib bonobo svga java mysql X sdl tcpd pam ssl perl python esd imlib oggvorbis gtk qt opengl mozilla cdr 3dnow acpi acpi4linux apache2 dga dvd ethereal faad ffmpeg gd gtk2 hostap-noplx imagemagick imlib2 maildir mmx moznocompose moznoirc moznomail openssh php plotutils samba sse vim-with-x -apm -arts -kde -mikmod -alsa -gpm tcltk"
Hi, Carsten, of course, an exact error output would be much more helpful. However, at the very least, we would need to know which sendmail version you got this error with. It's been awhile since this bug was opened, unfortunately, so can you give us an update? Thanks!
