Both of 2.8 and 2.9 build fine here, and don't hit autotools... So based on above if anyone who is able to reproduce this, is able to provide me a working workaround to prevent autotools for 2.9, please do
Fixed by 2.9.1. Upstream finally updated autotools to something modern.
