These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

==============================================================

At the end of the python build this is what I get. After that the usual portage build failure messages come up.

Failed to find the necessary bits to build these modules:
bsddb185 sunaudiodev
To find the necessary bits, look in setup.py in detect_modules() for the module's name.

Failed to build these modules:
_elementtree pyexpat

Reproducible: Always

Would you mind attaching build log ?
So, you know, somebody could get a look at the real error.
Comment 2 Arfrever Frehtes Taifersar Arahesis (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-04-13 15:09:34 UTC
Reinstall expat and attach build log.

Build log for python-2.6.4-r1
Comment 5 Alex Cannon 2010-04-14 04:45:37 UTC
I attached the build.log file.

How do I install expat? eix -s / -S expat shows nothing.
Comment 6 Arfrever Frehtes Taifersar Arahesis (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-04-14 07:13:44 UTC
Post the output of: emerge -ptv dev-libs/expat
Comment 7 Alex Cannon 2010-04-14 12:12:18 UTC
emerge -ptv dev-libs/expat

These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:

Comment 8 Arfrever Frehtes Taifersar Arahesis (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-04-14 17:30:12 UTC
Please run: emerge -1 dev-libs/expat

emerge -l dev-libs/expat log file
Comment 10 Arfrever Frehtes Taifersar Arahesis (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-04-15 03:55:56 UTC
Does the original problem still occur?
Comment 11 Alex Cannon 2010-04-15 12:37:47 UTC
Still the same problem with emerge python
Comment 12 Rafał Mużyło 2010-04-16 11:55:27 UTC
Comparing with my own build log, my first guess would be:
'-I/usr/local/include', that is 'it's time for a purge'.
Check whole /usr/local.
Comment 13 Alex Cannon 2010-04-16 17:51:33 UTC
Thanks! I renamed /usr/local and python installed. Is the /usr/local issue still considered to be a bug in the python build? I don't know what file was in /usr/local that would have been causing the problem.

No.

Probably headers of an older (manually installed) version of expat.
