2 problems, 1 is the configure script and gcc's new method of sorting include dirs and warning about them and generally being a bastard, along with deprecating a bunch of used header files... and the other is that gcc now reports it's version much more verbosely, and therefore in order to apply the wonderful patch someone else wrote for this we need to check for gcc-3.1 separately than gcc-3.0.x
