As your toolchain seems sane, most probable reason is running out of disk space/memory.

But anyhow - to check the state of disk space/memory I ran another emerge and it completed successfully! Consider it fixed :)
With '--jobs=5' memory could still have been an issue, it's just ccache that you avoided running into the problem again.
