I normally have my Portage open in a Terminal-Window on another Desktop. Sometimes Portage stops with an error but I don't know it. So it's possible that I have an aborted Portage-run for hours without knowing it. What I wish for me would be beep codes (like the one from BIOS at POST), say 1 long beep : Erorr 2 Short beeps : Hint/Message 2 long beeps : Portage-run has successfully finished 2 long and one short beep : portage has successfully finished, pleas run etc-update This could be a nice improvement. Of course it should be possible to enable this as a feature in make.conf. Well, this my personal idea -- look if you want to implement it. Regards, Benjamin "beejay" Judas
If this gets added to portage could it please be off by default? I dislike things beeping at me.
We'd need a portable way to beep... and I'm not overly familiar with system bells... I wouldn't mind adding it though.
Putting a hold on feature requests for portage as they are drowning out the bugs. Most of these features should be available in the next major version of portage. But for the time being, they are just drowning out the major bugs and delaying the next version's progress. Any bugs that contain patches and any bugs for etc-update or dispatch-conf can be reopened. Sorry, I'm just not good enough with bugzilla. ;)
Use a shell script.
Not going to happen.
