Description Wonko 2010-03-26 12:17:47 UTC
For some months, VMware player crashes on startup. Teh same version used to work at end of last year.

A simple start results in a *** glibc detected*** memory corruption error, but this is resolved by setting VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK=force (see bug #290006).

Still, vmplayer does not run.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. export VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK=force
2. vmplayer

Actual Results:
Logging to /tmp/vmware-wonko/setup-8548.log
/opt/vmware/player/bin/vmplayer: line 31: 8548 Segmentation fault (core dumped) "$BINDIR"/vmware-modconfig --appname="VMware Player" --icon="vmware-player"

When I execute the commands in /opt/vmware/player/bin/vmplayer by hand, and omit the "$BINDIR"/vmware-modconfig --appname="VMware Player" --icon="vmware-player", the player starts, but exits immediately when I open an existing VM.

Also happens as root.

strace of vmware-modconfig

strace "$BINDIR"/vmware-modconfig --appname="VMware Player" --icon="vmware-player" 2> vmware-modinfo.strace
Comment 3 Vadim Kuznetsov (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-03-26 14:00:48 UTC
Hi,
vmware crashed because vmware-modconfig crashed.
vmware-modconfig crashed after reading /opt/vmware/player/lib/vmware/modules/modules.xml.
Purpose of vmware-modconfig are to check if correct modules are installed and loaded and compile them if they are not. In gentoo vmware-modules ebuild takes care of that. Could you verify the versions of installed modules and if they are loaded?
Comment 4 Robert Schultz 2010-04-09 16:17:26 UTC
This happens on my machine as well. Running ~x86 and:
vmware-modules-1.0.0.25-r1
vmware-player-2.5.3.185404

Unmerging the packages and re-merging had no effect.

There is a forum thread about this issue here: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-820554-start-0.html

WORKAROUND:
Replace /opt/vmware/player/lib/vmware/lib/libxml2.so.2 with the one from /usr/lib

Comment 5 Vadim Kuznetsov (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-04-18 11:59:43 UTC
Please try vmware-player-2.5.4.246459.ebuild or vmware-player-2.5.3.185404-r1.ebuild
Thanks.
