x11-drivers/xf86-video-nouveau should be pulled in.

it seems only mesa processes nouveau card.

For xorg-drivers-1.7 this would not make sense, as xf86-video-nouveau is not planned to go stable with it. So the VIDEO_CARDS flag would have to be masked anyway.

after i installed xorg-{server,drivers}-1.8, my nouveau doesn't work anymore with "module abi version (6) does not match the servers (7)

You need to rebuild x11-drivers/* after upgrading xorg-server, read the elog messages.

the ebuild in portage evaluates the nouveau card, but doesn't pull the package, it's commented as last line

# ^Ivideo_cards_nouveau?       ( x11-drivers/xf86-video-nouveau )

is this intentional or a typo?
