Description Jared B. 2010-03-07 19:15:22 UTC
This has been a long-standing issue for me (and many others, judging by the forums) with OpenOffice on Gentoo. Under KDE, the quickstarter is either missing (no option for it at all in the OpenOffice options) or nonfunctional (enabling the option does nothing). I previously filed bug 242434 about this issue, and though a cause was never found, I eventually closed that bug because it started working again after a system rebuild and upgrade to KDE4. Now, however, it's back.

This time, I've determined that it's USE=kde that's causing the quickstarter functionality to break. If I build with USE=kde, I get no option for quickstarter in the Options menu. If I build with USE=-kde, the quickstarter option both exists and works, This is with openoffice-3.1.1.

I also figured out why it mysteriously started working when first upgrading to KDE4. At the time, KDE support in OpenOffice still required KDE3, so I had no choice but to disable the kde USE flag when building OpenOffice. That made the quickstarter start working as well, though I didn't connect the two at the time.

Now that proper KDE4 support is available for OpenOffice, I enabled the kde USE flag, and found that quickstarter stopped working. I then tried rebuilding with USE=-kde, and sure enough quickstarter began working again.

Can someone please look into what's causing this? It's very frustrating to have to choose between native desktop support and enhanced startup functionality. Thanks.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. build openoffice with USE=kde
2. observe missing quickstarter option
3. build openoffice with USE=-kde
4. observe available quickstarter option
5. observe proper quickstarter functionality

Actual Results:
quickstarter breaks with USE=kde

Expected Results:
quickstarter should always work, independent of kde USE flag

You say it doesn't work with openoffice-3.1.1, what about 3.2.0?
Comment 2 Jared B. 2010-03-24 00:54:55 UTC
Yes, it's still a problem in 3.2.0. I just upgrade with USE=kde set to confirm. The quickstarter option exists now, but it's completely nonfunctional.

and after rebuilding openoffice-3.2 with USE=-kde the quickstarter is working perfectly again

do you still have that problem with 3.2.1?
Comment 5 Jared B. 2010-11-11 20:38:10 UTC
Yep. It's a problem on my Arch Linux box as well (which seems to be built with the equivalent of USE=kde), as well as the LibreOffice build I've been testing, so I'm pretty sure this is an upstream bug rather than anything Gentoo-specific. Regardless, though, it sure would be nice to have both KDE and quickstarter functionality working properly. :-)
