I'm no expert, but did you see the doc at the end of that upstream bug? "Currently, this requires that the --skip-lock-tables (or --skip-opt) option be given."
1. The patch you linked is already present. 2. More reading the bug would indicate that upstream has NOT yet fixed all the rest of the issue. URL updated now.
Looking at the linked upstream bugs, seems this issue has yet to be fixed or confirmed as fixed.
The upstream bug is "dead". There was no activity since 2009. Time to close it as "CANTFIX"?

There is an upstream bug I opened in early 2008 that recently got fixed; but RESO UPSTREAM is probably be best action on this bug for now. We don't need to keep it open.
