Description Fabio Coatti 2010-02-26 13:28:24 UTC
Running eix-sync often I get the situation where a package is shown as requiring update but the emerge -uDa world command tells me that nothing needs update. Maybe this is my error, but in this case the messages are a bit misleading.
Look at this:
==================
[U]   == sci-visualization/gnuplot (4.2.6@02/12/2009; 4.2.6!t -> (~)4.2.6-r1!t): Command-line driven interactive plotting program
[*N] >> app-shells/prll ((~)0.4): A utility for parallelizing execution in bash or zsh
 * Time statistics:
    65 seconds for syncing
     1 seconds for eix-update
     1 seconds for eix-diff
    67 seconds total
calvin ~ # emerge -uDa world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

Nothing to merge; would you like to auto-clean packages? [Yes/No]
>>> Auto-cleaning packages...

>>> No outdated packages were found on your system.
====================

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1. run eix-sync
2. run emerge -uDa world
3.

calvin ~ # emerge --info

Comment 1 Doktor Notor 2010-02-26 14:52:49 UTC
`emerge --with-bdeps y -uDa world` any different? Plus, emerge --depclean -a :)
Comment 2 Fabio Coatti 2010-02-26 16:12:06 UTC
Ok, with emerge --with-bdeps y -uDa world gnuplot is not shown; it appears as a package that will be removed by a depclean. (i.e. is not in portage)
Basically this is related only to eix showing all packages that needs update and emerge upgrading only world (that is correct, only misleading in my case).

Thanks for clarification.

> Basically this is related only to eix showing all packages that needs update

Maybe this is a misinterpretation of the output: U in eix/diff-eix should
not be read as "need update" but as "can be updated" (in the sense that
a newer ebuild version is available and could be installed without needing any
further unmask actions concerning that ebuild).
eix does not (and never will) consider dependencies like a package manager:
It is a tool for showing packages (and some of their states like stability),
not a package manager replacement.

Nothing to fix here. Closing.
