net-mail/mailman (masked)
net-mail/mailx
net-mail/procmail
sys-apps/anacron
sys-apps/dcron
...
All depend on net-mail/ssmtp .. Why ssmtp and not virtual/mail ?
Postfix appears to work fine.

I dunno where you see them depending on net-mail/ssmtp
all of those depend on virtual/mta and in some cases virtual/mda as well.
I suspect you may have just done emerge -p mailx when you didn't have a mail
program installed, or your postfix didn't register it's PROVIDE="virtual/mta
virtual/mda"

there are definetly no depends on net-mail/ssmtp in the tree.
