GAWD! I just spent over three hours doing 'emerge sys-apps/texinfo' which re-compiled gcc3.1-r4 for the third time today (why!?) and the damned thing didn't even install texinfo! It did, however, re-install gcc3.1-r4 [again], thank you. My objective was to get back the /usr/bin/makeinfo and install-info which 'emerge prune gcc' took away without warning, and I still don't have them! (Well, actually I still have the binaries I copied from my other gentoo box, but they hardly count.) The point is that my list of installed packages does NOT include texinfo, so where did it go after all that work?
[sigh] Okay, I commented out texinfo in package.mask and this time it took four minutes to build instead of almost four hours of re-compiling gcc-3.1-r4. So--is it worth asking why 'emerge sys-apps/texinfo' recompiled gcc-3 instead of being masked out the way it should have been? It's been a very annoying day here in gcc-3-land. I'm going to have a cup of tea and then perhaps a tumbler of scotch before retiring.
I believe the problem was a virtual problem, with the current profiles, masks and packages do you still have this problem? THanks.
I don't know. I went back to gcc 2.9x several months ago, but my impression is that it was only a problem to people who were switching compiler versions.
thanks, bug go squish, and BTW there is going to be a complete version conversion script available for gentoo-1.4 :)
