Kept getting a 404, so I downloaded the synaptics tarball manually.  I 
think there is an error in the ebuild as follows:

http://w1.894.telia.com/~u89404340/touchpad/synaptics-
${SYNDRV_VER}.tar.bz2
...should be:
http://w1.894.telia.com/~u89404340/touchpad/files/synaptics-
${SYNDRV_VER}.tar.bz2

Fixed when I saw the post on gentoo-user
