I didn't make any changes to /etc/conf.d/dmcrypt.

Does the same happen, when you try to run "/etc/init.d/dmcrypt start"?
Or which script does try to setup the dm-crypt mappings?

Good idea with dmcrypt start! The script told me that it needs baselayout-2!
