I'm reporting this bug because the package in summary fails to build when forcing --as-needed on through spec files (check out http://blog.flameeyes.eu/2008/11/14/problems-and-mitigation-strategies-for-as-needed for details). Please note that this bug _might_ apply to -Wl,--as-needed in LDFLAGS as well; in both cases it should be fixed. Also, if this is due to the package in question not respecting user-defined LDFLAGS, you should get to fix that too. Check the attached build log. Quick peek at configure.in reveals that gtkhtml is not optional dep. You can either use webkit or gtkhtml-{2,3}. However configure allows you to disable them both, not adding proper libs... Not --as-needed issue (I got the same failure without it)
I think I'm hitting the same problem with -gtkhtml (I'm testing adding it back in now). I don't see a "webkit" USE flag so I'm uncertain as to what the alternative use flag might be (or is it buried someplace in the USE flags of one of the dependencies?)

The current version of balsa is now 2.4.7, and I believe they have changed the configuration options so you specify gtkhtml or webkit or (I've forgotten the third option). I wonder if webkit needs to be added as a new USE flag for balsa?
