After emerging cheese (with v4l) it doesn't show webcam's output. Emerging gnome-media fix it. Missing dependency i think. (In reply to comment #0) > Steps to Reproduce: > 1.emerge gnome-base > 2.emerge cheese > 3.run cheese Sorry, i mean gnome-base/gnome-light
Please try with gnome-2.26. gnome 2.24 is not supported anymore.
(In reply to comment #2) > Please try with gnome-2.26. gnome 2.24 is not supported anymore. > i've gnome-light-2.26.3 installed, do you mean cheese version? I've: gnome-light 2.26.3 cheese 2.24.3 gnome-media 2.26.0-r1
Ups, seems that cheese-2.24.3 is the latest one marked stable :-( Now that gtk+-2.18 is more near, I would try to directly stabilize 2.28.1-r1 since it doesn't *DEPEND on more 2.28 stuff But, about original problem, can reporter check if gnome-media is also required with cheese-2.28.1-r1 ?
Also, per bug 287856 it's clear that we should try to stabilize 2.28 one
In my case I don't need gnome-media with cheese-2.28.1-r1, but I don't use it with USE=v4l :-/

Basically it doesn't work. Remerging gnome-media: Works like a charm.
Please try to run it on a terminal looking for error messages while trying to reproduce the bug, I still don't see why cheese seems to need gnome-media in your case (I have checked other distributions cheese.spec files and cheese configure and they don't have any gnome-media trace)

However unmergin only gnome-media without removing all gst-* deps, keeps cheese working fine. Here's the list of deps that gnome-media pulls on my system: [ebuild N ] x11-themes/sound-theme-freedesktop-0.2 [ebuild N ] media-plugins/gst-plugins-xvideo-0.10.24 [ebuild N ] media-plugins/gst-plugins-mpeg2dec-0.10.12 [ebuild N ] media-plugins/gst-plugins-ffmpeg-0.10.7 [ebuild N ] media-plugins/gst-plugins-mad-0.10.12 [ebuild N ] media-plugins/gst-plugins-flac-0.10.16 [ebuild N ] media-plugins/gst-plugins-meta-0.10-r2 USE="X alsa ffmpeg flac mad mpeg ogg vorbis xv -a52 -dvb -dvd -esd -mythtv -oss -theora" [ebuild N ] gnome-extra/gnome-media-2.26.0-r1 USE="sound -debug -esd -gnomecd -ipv6 -pulseaudio" probably it's one (or more) of those.
Found it! media-plugins/gst-plugins-xvideo unmerging this only package makes cheese with holes (lol)
This is like bug 277480 then Just fixed for 2.24.3 too
