Trying to emerge =sys-devel/gcc-4.3.4, =sys-devel/gcc-4.3.4 (from the hardened overlay), or =dev-libs/boost-1.35.0-r5 causes my system to power off. I've tried this under three different kernels: gentoo-sources-2.6.30-r5, gentoo-sources-2.6.31-r6, hardened-sources-2.6.28-r9, with the same results. I'm not sure what's changed since I successfully built gcc-4.3.4, since that's my current compiler. This does not happen on my other hardened amd64 machine, but happens every time on this one. Sounds like a hardware failure to me. These two are quite resource intensive.
Can you check and maybe log your processor temperature during these emerges? Most likely overheating...
Yes, that was it; I rearranged things to get better airflow around the machine and that gcc version successfully merged.
