Description Peter Humphrey 2010-02-07 11:53:50 UTC
My screen has native 1600x1200 resolution, but I prefer to run at 1400x1050. I've used the control centre to set this resolution, but every time I log in via kdm the screen is at 1600x1200. If I start the control centre and the Display panel, the required resolution is set immediately.

Screen: Iiyama AU4831D flat panel.
VGA: PNY Quadro FX580
OpenGL: either xorg-x11 or nvidia - both give the same results.

Reproducible: Always

Comment 1 Peter Humphrey 2010-02-18 11:38:19 UTC
KDE-4.6.2 doesn't remember the screen resolution at all. I have to set it myself every time I log in.
Comment 2 Andreas K. Hüttel archtester gentoo-dev 2010-07-03 15:03:13 UTC
Is this still the case in KDE 4.4.4 (current stable)?
Comment 3 Peter Humphrey 2010-07-06 07:59:15 UTC
Yes, so it seems.

I had avoided the problem by changing the sizes of everything in the display, rather than changing the display resolution, so I hadn't noticed whether the problem remained in successive versions of KDE.

However, a quick test, in which I changed the resolution, then logged out and in again, confirms that the native screen resolution is used at login (via KDM) in preference to the control panel setting.
Comment 4 Peter Humphrey 2010-07-06 08:08:22 UTC
Further Info from two more tests:

1. After logging in via KDM, I set the resolution to 1400x1050, then logged out. I switched to VT5, /etc/init.d/xdm stop, startx and I was back to 1600x1200.

2. I set 1400x1050 again and exited X, then startx again put me back to 1600x1200.

So it seems not to be affected by KDM.

Hope that helps.

Maybe someone more knowledgable could comment whether kde is even _supposed_ to do this?!

Good question. However, I'd be surprised if KDE were, in effect, to declare itself more knowledgeable than the user. That's more like Windows.

can you report upstream plz?
Comment 8 Andreas K. Hüttel archtester gentoo-dev 2011-04-03 15:53:41 UTC
Do you have any better luck with kde-4.6.2 (in tree soon, stable candidate)?

Comment 10 Peter Humphrey 2011-04-03 16:49:20 UTC
I'll have to wait and see. I'm still on 4.4.5 and have the original behaviour.
Comment 11 Andreas K. Hüttel archtester gentoo-dev 2011-06-13 10:37:59 UTC
Please reopen if you still have the problem with kde-4.6.
