Using sys-apps/portage-2.2_rc61 I've just had a seldom problem with portage.
I had 3 emerge-processes running each using the '-j' option (up to -j8)
on an 8 core AMD64 machine.

One of these (binary emerge of more than 400 packages) failed with

This is now more than 5 years old without any further reports of this trouble.
User also reported he was unable to reproduce at the time.

Please re-open if this issue re-surfaces.
