a new version of screen has been released -- just nenaming the ebuild worked for me.
Beside bugfixes there are now "idle" and "blanker" commands.

seems that is's (masked) in portage:
$Header: /home/cvsroot/gentoo-x86/app-misc/screen/screen-4.0.1.ebuild,v 1.1
2003/10/08 03:17:20 spyderous Exp $
it's identical to screen-3.9.15-r1.ebuild with with all ARCHes except ~x86
removed.

if there really _is_ an issue with 2.6 -- shouldn't a kernel-version be added?

PS: it would be helpfull even for gentoo-devs to have a look at bugzilla
before adding packages and put at least a comment to the relevant bugs.
