This may be an artifact of autoconf-2.57a. I would recommend a downgrade and seeing if that fixes the problem.
Rolling back to autoconf-2.57(no 'a') does not fix it, same error. Rolling back to autoconf-2.54-r1 gives me this: >>> Source unpacked. autoreconf-2.54: `aclocal.m4' is updated configure.ac:28: error: Autoconf version 2.57 or higher is required aclocal.m4:1063: jm_MACROS is expanded from... configure.ac:28: the top level autom4te-2.54: /usr/bin/m4 failed with exit status: 1 configure.ac:28: error: Autoconf version 2.57 or higher is required aclocal.m4:1063: jm_MACROS is expanded from... configure.ac:28: the top level autom4te-2.54: /usr/bin/m4 failed with exit status: 1 autoreconf-2.54: /usr/bin/autoconf failed with exit status: 1
Rolling coreutils back to 5.0-r4 and using autoconf-2.57a works fine, so it's specific to the 5.0.91 version.
I second this. Also, portage says: [ebuild U ] sys-devel/autoconf-2.57a [2.57-r1] after installing 2.57a it says: [ebuild UD] sys-devel/autoconf-2.57-r1 [2.57a]
seems an auto* issue probably reemerging all of them may help
Nope, I have re-emerge automake and autoconf, but I still get this: $ sudo emerge coreutils Calculating dependencies ...done! >>> emerge (1 of 1) sys-apps/coreutils-5.0.91 to / >>> md5 src_uri ;-) coreutils-5.0.91.tar.bz2 >>> md5 src_uri ;-) coreutils-5.0.91-gentoo-1.0.tar.bz2 eutils flag-o-matic >>> Unpacking source... >>> Unpacking coreutils-5.0.91.tar.bz2 to /var/tmp/portage/coreutils-5.0.91/work >>> Unpacking coreutils-5.0.91-gentoo-1.0.tar.bz2 to /var/tmp/portage/coreutils-5.0.91/work acl acl * Applying various patches (bugfixes/updates)... * 001_all_coreutils-acl.patch... *** Bug 32048 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
can y'all try this with the updated coreutils please?
also to note, I've bumped m4-1.4-r1 to ppc stable, and now with that AND the new coreutils-5.0.91-r2, y'all should be sorted out. Please reopen the bug if I'm wrong about that.
Works on ppc (G3) with sys-devel/autoconf-2.57-r1 and sys-devel/m4-1.4-r1 (and only with that version currently).
