Same thing here!

nslookup and ping work, wget, ssh and so on don't.

You forgot to post your `emerge --info'.

Both: Do you happen to use nscd?

I have nscd on the system but it is not started (Runlevel: UNASSIGEND)

When I start it this is the log file and do wget www.google.ch:
7651: handle_request: request received (Version = 2) from PID 7667
7651:   GETFDHST
7651: handle_request: request received (Version = 2) from PID 7667
7651:   GETAI (www.google.ch)
7651: Haven't found "www.google.ch" in hosts cache!
7651: add new entry "www.google.ch" of type GETAI for hosts to cache (first)

BTW, this is the hosts entry in my nsswitch.conf
hosts:       files dns

Sorry, I didn't know it is mandatory to post emerge --info. I am new around here ;-)

I have experimented a little:

#include <stdio.h>
#include <netdb.h>

int main (int argc, char* argv[]){

	printf("looking up host: %s ", argv[1]);
	struct hostent* hostent = gethostbyname(argv[1]);
	if (hostent != NULL){
		printf("%03u.%03u.%03u.%03u\n",
		(unsigned)hostent->h_addr_list[0][0] &0xFF,
		(unsigned)hostent->h_addr_list[0][1] &0xFF,
		(unsigned)hostent->h_addr_list[0][2] &0xFF,
		(unsigned)hostent->h_addr_list[0][3] &0xFF);
	} else printf("NULL\n");
	return 0;
}

Works fine for www.google.com

It seems to be the getaddrinfo() function. Maybe I can look into this tomorrow.

I just found out, that
wget -4 www.google.com works!
wget -6 www.google.com says: Name or service not known
wget www.google.com says: Temporary failure in name resolution

It's probably a good idea to attach these as well:

/etc/hosts
/etc/resolv.conf

My /etc/hosts says

# IPv4 and IPv6 localhost aliases
127.0.0.1	localhost
::1		localhost

127.0.0.1	gentoo gentoo.peer
192.168.1.1	gateway gateway.peer

My resolv.conf is written by dhcp:

# Generated by resolvconf
search peer
nameserver 192.168.1.1

As a workaround I re-emerged with USE FLAG -ipv6 and now everything seems to work.

you re-emerged what ? glibc has no support for USE=ipv6.

what nameservers are you guys using ? if they're ones you control, describe the exact software running on them.

have you configured ipv6 on your systems properly ? or do you have a normal ipv4 network and you just have ipv6 enabled everywhere as a proactive measure ?
Comment 11 BlinkEye 2010-02-15 06:55:48 UTC
I don't have no issue any more. Maybe this was in fact a problem of the dns server I was using (which I don't control)? I certainly did not change any USEFLAG or re-emerge glibc ...

I re-emerged everything that has a -ipv6 flag. I also disabled the ipv6 support in the kernel.

The DNS I am using is not under my control - it is part of the Swisscom-TV VDSL installation.

not much to go on

same for me.

no, this bug report may be set to INVALID, since this obviously was a provider issue.

I disagree. It was working with the previous version of glibc and is working fine with other distributions. Not to mention the M$ stuff.

How can I interrupt the emerge process, so I have the patched and compiled source to do some testing / debugging? Is there a manual?

The command "ebuild" is your friend.

the bugzilla howto (see front page of bugzilla) documents how to build things with debugging support enabled. i imagine the gentoo documentation page has other guides too.
