It would be nice if it was possible to have both debug and release versions of Qt as a useflag or whatever.

No, debug-and-release is supported on Mac only.

I don't understand how it's only supported in Mac only. As I could also do it on Windows.

Both the configure script and the documentation say so.
Anyway, what did you do exactly?
