Description Mark Locascio 2010-01-11 16:46:05 UTC
I am attempting to emerge VLC 1.0.4 (updating from 1.0.3). During the ./configure phase, I get these errors at the end:

checking GL/glu.h usability... no
checking GL/glu.h presence... yes
configure: WARNING: GL/glu.h: present but cannot be compiled
configure: WARNING: GL/glu.h: check for missing prerequisite headers?
configure: WARNING: GL/glu.h: see the Autoconf documentation
configure: WARNING: GL/glu.h: section "Present But Cannot Be Compiled"
configure: WARNING: GL/glu.h: proceeding with the preprocessor's result

checking GL/glx.h usability... no
checking GL/glx.h presence... no
checking for GL/glx.h... no
configure: error: Please install GL development package. Alternatively you can also configure with --disable-glx.

Please also note that GL/glx.h SHOULD HAVE BEEN found also. It, like gl.h, glu.h, and the rest, are all in /usr/include/GL.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge --sync
2. emerge -uNDv media-video/vlc

Actual Results:
econf failed

Expected Results:
Successful update

I don't SEE VIDEO_CARDS among the vars.
All the problems come from /usr/include/GL/glext.h.
What does 'eselect opengl list' print ?
Try resetting it.
Comment 4 Mark Locascio 2010-01-12 15:46:51 UTC
# eselect opengl list
Available OpenGL implementations:
  [1] nvidia *
  [2] xorg-x11

Thanks for the comment. I just remembered that I switched from the proprietary nVidia drivers a few weeks ago to the ones from Gentoo and I forgot to set the VIDEO_CARDS variable back to "nvidia." Set it in /etc/make.conf, then re-emerged a few things to get the new use flag set up.

The error persists though. New emerge --info:

Comment 6 Rafał Mużyło 2010-01-12 19:06:18 UTC
I hope you emerged those drivers, not used
upstream installer, as it tends to mess things up on Gentoo.
Error looks the same.
Try following:
1.reset to xorg-x11
2.reemerge mesa
3.reemerge nvidia-drivers
4.set it to nvidia
If that doesn't work, attach that /usr/include/GL/glext.h
(though chances are this will end up INVALID anyway, as a result of
some mistake on your part).

Oh, and state exact version of nvidia-drivers, you've emerged.

I originally did have the third-party drivers installed, then I uninstalled them and emerged them a few weeks ago.

Done, everything worked fine.

It is attached, and you're right, it seems broken (it's mostly binary). So it seems then, since you say the error looks the same, that this isn't a problem with the ebuild. I saw some posts about similar errors after the release of a new verison of autoconf, and I thought that's what this was.

> Oh, and state exact version of nvidia-drivers, you've emerged.

x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-185.18.36

Thanks
Comment 9 Mark Locascio 2010-01-12 19:47:11 UTC
Sorry, by "everything worked fine" I meant that those four steps were successful, but the problem still remains.
Comment 10 Rafał Mużyło 2010-01-12 21:16:44 UTC
Did you have a hard drive / power failure ?
That's not /usr/include/GL/glext.h

Check the content of include subdirs in /usr/lib/opengl
if glext.h there look correctly, remove the corrupted one
and reselect.
Comment 11 Mark Locascio 2010-01-12 22:28:53 UTC
Didn't have any failures that I know of...

Turns out glext.h and glxext.h, which should have been symlinks to /usr/lib64/opengl/include/nvidia/glext.h and glxext.h were instead pointing to files in /usr/lib64/opengl/include/global for some reason. I deleted them and reset eselect and it created symlinks to the nvidia subdirectory.

It's odd that those links didn't get fixed when I toggled back and forth between xorg-x11 and nvidia opengl interfaces.

VLC emerges correctly now.

Sorry this wasn't an actual bug. Thanks for the help though!
Comment 12 Rafał Mużyło 2010-01-12 22:40:42 UTC
Content of the attached header suggests that
a disk / power failure took place.
