When playing media on mplayer without -ao alsa option it always outputs sound to oss.
mplayer was built with alsa and -oss USE flags:

2. play media with mplayer

Actual Results:  
Default audio output to oss

Expected Results:  
Audio output to alsa

do you have a .mplayerrc or other config files overriding it?

The OSS use flag is ignored unless you also disable the radio use flag.

I don't have any config files, just a freshly installed mplayer.

Is the radio flag what I think it is for? I enabled it because I have a tv-card with fm-radio support. Didn't use the tv-card yet.

Right, so you can just override it in mplayer configs with ao=alsa, either globally (/etc/mplayer.conf) or locally (~/.mplayer/config)
