I have found a way round this problem.

First uninstall the old version: emerge -C editra

and then: emerge -va editra

it seems sporadic. it stopped me from upgrading the past two weeks, but today i can't reproduce it for the life of me.
Comment 6 Ryan Hill (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-02-19 00:20:56 UTC
added a temporary fix for 0.5.32. future releases will have an option we can use to disable this behaviour.
