Description brant williams 2009-12-14 13:03:14 UTC
* QA Notice: The following files contain writable and executable sections
 * Files with such sections will not work properly (or at all!) on some
 * architectures/operating systems. A bug should be filed at
 * http://bugs.gentoo.org/ to make sure the issue is fixed.
 * For more information, see http://hardened.gentoo.org/gnu-stack.xml
 * Please include the following list of files in your report:
 * Note: Bugs should be filed for the respective maintainers
 * of the package in question and not hardened@g.o.
 * RWX --- --- usr/lib64/chromium-browser/chrome

Reproducible: Didn't try

Steps to Reproduce:
1.emerge www-client/chromium-4.0.266.0 (added this ebuild, and all necessary deps, to /etc/portage/package.keywords beforehand)

2. Package built successfully; Portage elog warning asked me to file a bug.

3. Bug report filed. :)

Actual Results:
I'm going to attempt to execute the browser; try it out, surf the web, see if I like it, etc... possibly unmerge it...

Expected Results:
Not being asked to file a bug. ;) No big deal, though. Gentoo rocks; you guys are doing awesome!

I'm running the following profile:

/usr/portage/profiles/default/linux/amd64/10.0/desktop/

And I like Gentoo.

And cheese.

Comment 2 Bernard Cafarelli gentoo-dev 2009-12-14 22:15:34 UTC
Thanks for the report! In fact you have two bugs in one here: one on RWX sections in chrome binary, another where it crashes at start

As you are on stable amd64, do you by any chance use nvidia binary drivers? Then the crash is bug #295756

Let's keep this bug open for the exec stack problem, I recall there were such warnings when getting chromium in portage, but they were fixed... Obviously they're back!
Comment 3 brant williams 2009-12-14 22:26:27 UTC
Hey there. Yes, I do use the (stable) nvidia binary drivers. Thanks for pointing out bug 295756 (I searched before posting, but didn't yet have the segfault issue). I may try using the latest (testing) version of the drivers, as that seemed to work for a user there.

Thanks again.

So there are four .S files in native_client that lack the .note.GNU-stack marking. Pawel, can you take care of sending this upstream?

I think 4.0.288.1 was okay... Please reopen if that's not the case.
Comment 6 Paweł Hajdan, Jr. (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-01-15 10:22:17 UTC
Ooops, no. Still there in 4.0.295.0. Will report upstream right now.
