Description Hal Engel 2009-12-13 20:36:13 UTC
The upgrade to xorg-server 1.7.3 forced the removal of x11-drivers/linuxwacom and the installation of x11-drivers/xf86-input-wacom. x11-drivers/xf86-input-wacom has a number of problems but I will only document one of them here.

The ebuild does not install the wacom utilities such xsetwacom which is needed by some configuration apps to setup the tablet. Most distros have these utilities and the drivers in separate packages so that they can be installed independently. But the only way to get these utilities with the current packages is to install x11-drivers/linuxwacom which is not possible with xorg-server 1.7.3.

I'm not sure if this is a bug, the utilities might have been discontinued, but let's see what the maintainers say.

You're quite right, the xsetwacom tool is not yet available for xf86-input-wacom. Control of the xf86-input-wacom devices should currently be carried out using the xinput tool (x11-apps/xinput).

xf86-input-wacom is still very much in the early stages, and if you find some functionality missing that you required, it's recommended that you drop back to xorg-server-1.6 and continue using the linuxwacom packages.

Having said that the upstream maintainer has recently ported the xsetwacom tool to the new xinput-2 API, and that will hopefully be bundled with the next release (0.10.3 or later). For more information on this re-implementation, please see http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_name=58291.22893.32673-18231-102119463-1260776290%40seznam.cz&forum_name=linuxwacom-devel.

Since we can't do anything about this directly now, I'm going to mark this as LATER. Please feel free to reopen this if an xf86-input-wacom release comes out with xsetwacom support, but the Gentoo package still does not include it.

Thanks, Mike, for the update on this issue. My Intuos4 works pretty darn well out of the box. Impressive. I am going to stick with xorg-server-1.7 for now, but I'm looking forward to fully customizing my tablet (i.e. side buttons) and rocking the Gimp.

Hiya guys,

I just pushed 0.10.3 to the main tree. It features an early version of xsetwacom, but be warned it does seem to feature some regressions. They completely reworked the internals of it, and at the moment I'm staying on 0.10.2-r1, since it breaks mouse clicks (at least for me). Probably best to file bugs upstream (which appears to be the linuxwacom-devel mailing list), but do feel free to grab me on IRC or file a bug here if I can be of any help...
