for example, all the files in the profiles dir ... their purpose, how they work, etc... i guess if i can find any other files that arent documented, i'll do them up too
I've started writing some kind of "portage technical reference" where I'm also documenting the different "configuration" files. I currently have the following files on my list: /etc/: make.globals make.conf make.profile /etc/make.profile/: deprecated (*) make.defaults packages packages.build use.defaults use.mask virtuals /var/cache/edb/: world virtuals $PORTDIR/profiles/: arch.list categories package.mask thirdpartymirrors updates/ use.desc use.local.desc /etc/portage/: bashrc package.mask package.unmask package.keywords (*) package.use (*) categories (*) means that support for this file is only in CVS, not in a public portage version.
Please do not duplicate information that is already in the handbook. http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/draft/handbook.xml?part=2
BTW, that last was not that I'm saying that you are; you are probably discussing the Portage-specifics from a different PoV than currently in the handbook, and that's fine. But if you're going to talk about Portage extensively, don't start with explaining Portage and Portage's features as the users will already have seen that in the handbook.
no, when i say document, i mean manpage thus it wont be a 'hold my hand and lets skip' guide, but it will aim to be useful/friendly
Oh okay, I'm always in favor of manpages.... :)
please check out portage(5) now in cvs thanks to Marius for a lot of the base information feedback is nice ;)
