I have vanilla-sources-2.624.4 installed. If it satisfied the dependency, why would it want to install another source package?
hplip really does depend on virtual/linux-sources by inheriting linux-info eclass. Anything that inherits kernel-2 eclass ought to provide virtual/linux-sources, which includes vanilla-sources. Since I have hplip already installed, I can use qdepends to verify that it depends on virtual/linux-sources: $ qdepends hplip net-print/hplip-2.8.6b: !net-print/hpijs ... virtual/linux-sources And eix shows vanilla-sources as providing virtual/linux-sources: $ eix -P virtual/linux-sources | grep vanilla-sources * sys-kernel/vanilla-sources The specific version of vanilla-sources you have is no longer in the tree; perhaps it had a problem? What happens if you install vanilla-sources-2.6.24.7, which eix lists as satisfying virtual/linux-sources? Also, please post your 'emerge --info' and 'emerge -pvt hplip' output.

Ok here's the interpretation of your results: * there was something wrong with your old vanilla-sources, so hplip was picking the default package to satisfy virtual/linux-sources dependency (default happens to be gentoo-sources) * once you installed the current vanilla-sources, it satisfied virtual/linux-sources dependency and hplip no longer tried to install anything else to satisfy it So, the problem is not with the current tree; the problem has already been fixed.
