I have boost-1.35.0-r2 installed in my x86 box (it is the only stable version). When I want to emerge lyx-1.6.4 (which is also marked as stable) the build stage fails due to a missing header: Making all in support i686-pc-linux-gnu-g++ -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I../.. -I./.. -DQT_NO_STL -DQT_NO_KEYWORDS -DQT_SHARED -I/usr/include/qt4 -I/usr/include/qt4/QtCore -pipe -O2 -march=core2 -fomit-frame-pointer -MT FileMonitor.lo -MD -MP -MF .deps/FileMonitor.Tpo -c FileMonitor.cpp -o FileMonitor.o In file included from FileMonitor.cpp:13: ./../support/FileMonitor.h:18:28: error: boost/signal.hpp: No such file or directory (more and more errors here). I have qlist'ed the boost contents, and discovered that all the headers are installed in /usr/include/boost-1.35/boost/ (which I find OK due to slotting in boost). A workaround is issuing `cd /usr/include ; ln -s /usr/include/boost-1.35/boost' as root. This allowed me to emerge lyx and other packages (don't recall now) that depend on boost. Is that the only boost version you've got emerged ? Did you emerge any more recent boost version and then unmerged it ?
The latest stable version of boost on x86 is 1.35.0-r5 (which you have installed). Use "eselect boost update" to select best available version. If lyx still fails with this error, make sure you don't have any unversioned boost files and directories in /usr/include and /usr/lib and run eselect again. This problem is either caused by using USE="-eselect" or bug 290691.

If it doesn't make sure you have the latest stable versions of eselect and eselect-boost and give the output of "ls -l /usr/include |grep boost".
