Description Timothy Miller 2009-11-18 01:38:08 UTC
I cannot tell which of these things is causing the problem, but something has broken my graphical console. When I boot up, I get an fbdev console. I login and type "startx", which starts X11 (KDE, if you care). When I logout, and X quits, I expect to get my console back, but I don't. I get a blank screen. I can restart X11 remotely. And also, the keyboard still works (ctrl-alt-delete will reboot). But the display is blank. The only way to get the console back is to reboot.

When I first encountered this problem, I figured I had an X11 config or build problem. So I removed all X11 packages and reinstalled them. This time, I switched from "radeonhd" to "ati", with an empty xorg.conf. I also updated to 2.6.31-gentoo-r6 (from r1). None of these things fixed the problem. I still have the same console hosing when I quit X11.

Reproducible: Always

If by fbdev console you are referring to kernel modesetting, this does not yet work with any release of xf86-video-ati
Comment 2 Timothy Miller 2009-11-18 17:36:38 UTC
I kept bugging the people in #radeon in freenet, and I finally figured out what's going on. The original fb console driver for Radeon and the new ati drivers for X11 are not compatible.

The solution is to set up Kernel Mode Setting and not include the Radeon console driver so that the generic one uses DRM and KMS. Then it all works just fine.

The REAL bug is that Gentoo docs don't mention any of this. In fact, all Gentoo docs on setting up both X.org and framebuffer console are dangerously out of date.

Sounds to me like this problem is worth documenting.

How about mentioning the driver conflict in http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/ati-faq.xml

Thanks for reporting; fixed in CVS.
