Did you try using the latest LiveCD at http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/gentoo/experimental/sparc/livecd/sparc/gentoo-sparc-1.4_rc4-18Aug2003.iso.bz2 ?
Forget the last comment. Just got told that the old Sparcstations dont work with 2.4.x Kernels. I am not sure if its possible to get a 2.2.x Kernel working on the LiveCD. Maybe netboot or first installing Debian would be a solution...
Currently, the 2.4 kernels do not have working support for the sun4c cpus. Your best bet would be as Sven indicated and try one of the Debian netboot images to see if they work for you.
