Description Rachel Greenham 2009-11-16 17:16:35 UTC
The changelog for x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-190.42-r3 contains:

06 Nov 2009; Doug Goldstein <cardoe@gentoo.org>
+nvidia-drivers-190.42-r3.ebuild:
remove generation of libGL.la since eselect-opengl-1.0.9 and newer no
longer uses it. refactor installation of libraries to fix FreeBSD issues

Now I cannot update the system because various other packages require /usr/lib64/libGL.la to be present. Those affected include:

media-plugins/gst-plugins-pango-0.10.25
(emerge -avuND world stops here)

x11-plugins/compiz-plugins-extra-0.8.4-r1
(revdep-rebuild stops here)

In both cases they specifically stop because the file is missing. eg:

/bin/sh ../../libtool --tag=CC --mode=link x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -Wall -Wpointer-arith -Wstrict-prototypes -Wmissing-prototypes -Wmissing-declarations -Wnested-externs -fno-strict-aliasing -module -avoid-version -no-undefined -Wl,-O1 -o libnotification.la -rpath /usr/lib64/compiz notification.lo -lXcomposite -lXdamage -lXrandr -lXinerama -lSM -lxslt -lz -lm -lstartup-notification-1 -lXfixes -lICE -lxml2 -lnotify -lgtk-x11-2.0 -ldbus-glib-1 -lgdk-x11-2.0 -latk-1.0 -lgio-2.0 -lpangoft2-1.0 -lgdk_pixbuf-2.0 -lpangocairo-1.0 -lcairo -lpango-1.0 -lfreetype -lfontconfig -lgmodule-2.0 -ldbus-1 -lpthread -lrt -lgobject-2.0 -lglib-2.0
/bin/grep: /usr/lib64/libGL.la: No such file or directory
/bin/sed: can't read /usr/lib64/libGL.la: No such file or directory
libtool: link: `/usr/lib64/libGL.la' is not a valid libtool archive
make[3]: *** [libnotification.la] Error 1

BTW eselect-opengl version is: app-admin/eselect-opengl-1.1.1-r2

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge --sync (with ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~amd64")
2. emerge -avuND world
3. x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-190.42-r3 installed
4. Attempts to build packages needing libGL.la

compz-plugins-extra build.log

For completion's sake, the build.log from the failed compiz-plugins-extra build attempted during revdep-rebuild. Substantive part already in the main description anyway.

I got stuck on this one too. A workaround is:

# cd /usr/lib64
# ln -s opengl/xorg-x11/lib/libGL.la .

However, this workaround breaks the next time that "eselect opengl set" is run, e.g. by xorg-server emerges.

I think the problem is in eselect-opengl rather than nvidia-drivers. My box has opengl set to xorg-x11, so even if nvidia-drivers doesn't generate a .la, it should only cause a problem when when opengl is pointing at nvidia.

Please run
eselect opengl set nvidia && lafilefixer --justfixit

Report back if this fxes your problem.

This fixes gst-plugins-pango for me in x86.
Comment 5 Rachel Greenham 2009-11-21 13:01:46 UTC
Apologies for not responding at the time; but yes, I can confirm lafilefixer fixed it for me too. :-)
