Description Alex Barbieri 2009-11-10 01:46:56 UTC
After upgrading from media-libs/sdl-mixer-1.2.9 to media-libs/sdl-mixer-1.2.10 games-arcade/frozen-bubble-2.2.0 fails to start with "at /usr/games/bin/frozen-bubble line 312".

/usr/games/bin/frozen-bubble line 312 is "$sound{$_} = SDL::Sound->new($sound_path);" which leads me to believe it is definitely an SDL problem.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Start frozen-bubble
2.Observe Failure
3.

Actual Results:
frozen-bubble fails to initialize.

Expected Results:
frozen-bubble initializes.

Comment 1 Alex Barbieri 2009-11-10 01:51:32 UTC
Just to note, reemerging frozen-bubble did not affect the crash.
Comment 2 Mr. Bones. (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-11-10 01:54:31 UTC
No, it wouldn't. If frozen-bubble is critical for you, you can downgrade to sdl-mixer-1.2.8.
Comment 3 Alexander E. Patrakov 2009-11-12 17:03:32 UTC
The problem is not limited to frozen bubble. Wesnoth is affected, too. "strace -e open wesnoth" shows:

open("/usr/share/games/wesnoth/data/core/music/revelation.ogg", O_RDONLY) = 14

until it runs out of file descriptors.

even more games are affected (all using sdl-mixer?)
reproducable with mucade and fofix.
probably an upstream bug
Comment 5 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2009-11-15 20:09:16 UTC
see if sdl-mixer-1.2.11 fixes things

yes, 1.2.11 && rebuilding all apps depending on sdl-mixer (so.0 vs. so.1)
fixes this.

> see if sdl-mixer-1.2.11 fixes things

After emerging sdl-mixer-1.2.11, single player in frozen-bubble works. However, trying to start a two-player game crashes with a segmentation fault. I was unable to test net-play.
Comment 8 Mr. Bones. (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-11-16 06:19:49 UTC
The two player issue is covered in bug #291858. This one is fixed by upgrading to sdl-mixer-1.2.11
