After upgrading from media-libs/sdl-mixer-1.2.9 to media-libs/sdl-mixer-1.2.10 games-arcade/frozen-bubble-2.2.0 fails to start with "at /usr/games/bin/frozen-bubble line 312". /usr/games/bin/frozen-bubble line 312 is "$sound{$_} = SDL::Sound->new($sound_path);" which leads me to believe it is definitely an SDL problem. No, it wouldn't. If frozen-bubble is critical for you, you can downgrade to sdl-mixer-1.2.8.

The two player issue is covered in bug #291858. This one is fixed by upgrading to sdl-mixer-1.2.11
