Description Juergen Rose 2009-11-09 21:31:53 UTC
If I try to start rhythmbox as ordinary user, it fails with:
rose@condor:/home/rose(29)$ rhythmbox
process 29205: type array 97 not a basic type
D-Bus not built with -rdynamic so unable to print a backtrace

If I emerge dbus with the debug USE flag rhythmbox fails with:
rose@condor:/home/rose(36)$ rhythmbox

I think that the ordinary user rose belongs to all relevant groups:
rose@condor:/home/rose(40)$ id
uid=1203(rose) gid=100(users) Gruppen=4(adm),6(disk),7(lp),10(wheel),14(uucp),18(audio),19(cdrom),27(video),35(games),60(mysql),100(users),250(portage),1001(haldaemon),1002(plugdev),1008(scanner),1027(vboxusers),1028(kvm),1029(qemu),1036(gsm),1041(tuntap)

Reproducible: Always

emerge -pv rhythmbox gvfs udev dbus please
Comment 2 Juergen Rose 2009-11-10 09:36:35 UTC
After the last 'emerge --sync; emerge -uvDN world', I could again start rhythmbox as ordinary user rose, but I got a lot of warnings:

root@condor:/home/rose/(20)# rhythmbox

The result of 'emerge -pv rhythmbox gvfs udev dbus' is:
root@condor:/home/rose/Tarantel_hw_configuration(25)# emerge -pv rhythmbox gvfs udev dbus

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Comment 3 Gilles Dartiguelongue (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-11-12 11:09:20 UTC
There must be something wrong in either how you start your X session or how is your system setup. Those messages basically say you have no session dbus, no gconf and no gnome-session running.

Please tell us how your start your X session. Do you have a session dbus started (ps aux |egrep "dbus.*session") ?
Comment 4 Juergen Rose 2009-11-16 06:24:40 UTC
I start X via gdm. But at the affected computer, I login very seldom, maybe I am logged in for more than to weeks. I.e., maybe I had no fresh login after the gnome upgrade.
Comment 5 Gilles Dartiguelongue (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-01-21 00:00:48 UTC
if you upgraded to a new major version of gnome, it will most likely cause problems if you do not restart your session. Did you restart your system since then and if so how are things going now ?
Comment 6 Sunit Das 2010-03-23 17:12:58 UTC
I had this same error occur in gxine.

A gentoo forum post claims that it is related to gvfs protocol changes, and suggests killing gvfs processes (on my workstation, it was "gvfsd" and "gvfs-hal-volume-monitor").

This worked for me. It also further justifies Gilles suggestion to restart the session; doing so would certainly restart any gvfs-related daemons.

The forum post:

Due to lack of updated information in the last 2 weeks, there is no way we can further help you solve this problem. Thanks for reporting anyway.
