Can you boot with pci=nomsi and report back the results?
Can you test with the latest git-sources, which is currently 2.6.32_rc7-r1?

Using the same kernel with with hrtimer off, and frequency 100Hz, I can't reproduce it anymore. I'll try if I go back the problem appears again.

I think I have to reopen this thing again; because it seems that if no IP was received the machine does hang again.

I understand this is rather vague, I am able to pull the network cable now after it was used, but not after it didn't receive a link. Will investigate this further, with a non connected switch.
